How To Take Charge Of The Tv
|
Many children enjoy TV, and they can learn from it. Keep inmind, though, that young children often imitate what theysee, good or bad. It's up to you to decide how much TV andwhat kinds of shows your child should watch.
Think about your child's age and choose the types of thingsthat you want him to see, learn, and imitate.
Look for TV shows that
--teach your child something,
--hold his interest,
--encourage him to listen and question,
--help him learn more words,
--make him feel good about himself, and
--introduce him to new ideas and things.
"Sesame Street," "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood," "Blue'sClues," "Between the Lions," "Reading Rainbow," "Barney &Friends," "Zoom," and "Zoboomafoo," are some shows that youmay want to consider. Many other good children's programsare available on public television stations and on cablechannels such as the Disney Channel and Nickelodeon.
Limit the time that you let your child watch TV. Too muchtelevision cuts into important activities in a child's life, such as reading, playing with friends, and talking withfamily members.
Watch TV with your child when you can. Talk with him aboutwhat you see. Answer his questions. Try to point out thethings in TV programs that are like your child's everydaylife.
When you can't watch TV with your child, spot check to seewhat he is watching. Ask questions after the show ends. Seewhat excites him and what troubles him. Find out what he haslearned and remembered.
Go to the library and find books that explore the themes ofthe TV shows that your child watches. Or help your child touse his drawings or pictures cut from magazines to make abook based on a TV show.

In Defense Of The Jelly Bean
Should a parent give a child a tangible reward when he or she has behaved properly or performed some important task such as doing homework, or helping around the house? Parents Demand Dumbed-down Tests:an Unintended Bad Consequence Of The No Child Left Behind Act
The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 is making the problem of cheating, low academic standards, and public schools lying to parents, even worse. Under this Act, the Department of Education now requires students to pass standardized tests. Failing schools will lose federal funding and other perks if their students consistently turn in a bad performance on these tests.Holding schools and teachers accountable, and expecting students to demonstrate what they've learned, sounds like a good idea. But this Act means that badly-taught students, victims of dumbed-down texts and bad teaching methods like new math and whole-language instruction, now have to pass difficult standardized tests they are not ready for.As a result, millio...(related: Parenting)

Back To School
It is hard to believe that summer is coming to a close, but the fall and school season is fast approaching. Our son will be beginning his first year of preschool this year and we are both excited and nervous. How nice it has been to not be on a schedule and to be able to lounge around in our pajamas, yet at the same time I am looking forward to having some time on my hands to tackle those projects that have been looming before me all summer long.I remember the hectic mornings of my youth with three children in our parentâ??s house. I remember the constant fight over the bathroom, the rushed breakfast, our poor mom driving us to school every single day, and the frantic sense of urgency that we all had to get to where ...(related: Parenting)
