How Much Water Are You Wasting?

Parenting

Are you being smart about water conservation? Do you consider yourself an environmentally conscious person? Well, how do you wash your car? Do you do it in your driveway? If you wash your car in your driveway with a garden hose and shut-off nozzle, you will use five gallons of water to fill your soap bucket to get suds. You will then wet down your car for two minutes or more, soap your car and then rinse the car for four minutes or more. If the garden hose has 60 PSI of pressure or more it puts out a minimum of ten gallons of water per minute (GPM). The total amount of water usage is as follows:

5 Gallons in the bucket plus 20 Gallons to wet the car @ 10 GPM plus 40 Gallons to rinse the car @ 10 GPM equals 65 Gallons of water

This would be a very water conscious person in good shape who can move briskly around the car. This person would have at least sixty gallons moving down the gutter into the storm drain.

One way to better conserve water is to use Dry Wash if your car is not too dirty. Another is to use a personal pressure washer, which start at about $80.00 at Wal-Mart or a deluxe unit for $600.00 at Home Depot. These units can help you conserve water when washing around the house no matter what you are cleaning today. We all need to do our part at work, at home and teaching our kids respect for the water supplies.

When washing your car think about your water usage, try to conserve and cut down the use. Wash your car on the lawn so the water is helping the grass. Fill up the soap bucket half way; the more suds you use the water it takes to rinse. Be smart, teach your family water saving methods around the house. If we all do a little it will add up to a lot. Think about it.

Elephants And Teenagers
Something eerily familiar happened in KwaZulu-Natal's Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Park in Africa recently. The adult elephants were taken away and the orphaned youngsters were left to fend for themselves. The youngsters started the path to sexual maturity. The young boys were going into lengthy 'musths', as a dog would go into heat, much longer than a normal elephant in a normal ...(related: Parenting)

The Free Ride In Public Schools
To protect children's self-esteem or deflect complaints by parents, many public schools today automatically advance failing students to the next grade level. In other schools, some students are left back a maximum of one year, then promoted again regardless of their academic skills. The No Child Left Behind Act tries to solve this problem. The federal government is pressuring public schools to set minimum standards that each student must pass before advancing to the next grade. However, in spite of these new laws, many states still have semi-automatic advancement based on the student's overall per-formance. Many schools consider a stud...(related: Parenting)

How To Create An Emotional Bond With Your Child
One of the most powerful tools that parents have for raising their children is the natural emotional bond that exists between them and their child. Children who feel close to their parents will have a strong desire to obey them. No child with this type of connection to his parents will want to risk hurting that connection by disobeying them. When such a relationship exists, the mere look of dissatisfaction on the face of a parent will usually be enough to curb inappropriate behavior. This bond is so strong and so potent that it lasts even through adolescence when most of the disciplinary tools at our disposal are ineffective. Often, it is the only...(related: Parenting)

A Dialogue With An Adhd Non-believer

Dear Sir,

It was with some interest that I read the article What You Should Know About Attention Deficit Disorder by Edward W. after having it handed to me by a member of our church. There were elements of the article that were insightful, helpful, and needed to be said in a public forum, especially the discussion of the moral and spiritual dimensions of behavior. For this part of the article I applaud Mr. W.

However, Mr. W's discussion on the physiological/biological aspects of ADD ADHD was lacking to the point of being misleading to the readers. I am sure that Mr. Welch had no intention of misleading any readers, as that would hardly reflect the "biblical guidelines with which to understand ADD" that he seeks to communicate. Therefo...(related: Parenting)

Anti Scooter Media Frenzy
An estimated five million scooters will be sold this year and according to the U.S. Product Safety Commission 26,000 scooter-related injuries were reported before the end of December 2000! 90 percent of those injuries were to children 14 and under. The Consumer Product Safety Counsel also received reports of two deaths tied to scooter injuries. Several elementary schools are discussing ways to ban kids from riding scooters to school. Newspapers across the country headline that "Scooters Lead to ER Visits"!Before you buy into the media hype about the dangers of the most popular Christmas gift last year, you should educate yourself by considering the statistics of other play equipment commonly used by these same kids.In 1999 U.S. Statistical Abstract reported 566,085 bike related injuries. Skate board related injuries from that same yea...(related: Parenting)
