Children - Blessing Or Curse

Parenting

You're trying to catch up on some sleep on a quiet Saturday morning when you hear the shrill scream of a child, who seems upset with the fact that another child is pointing at him or her, and has done so for the past three minutes. You turn over and hope that they will resolve it without your intervention?but that's unlikely, given their past.

The screams get louder, and now it's two children instead of one. A few seconds later, one stops screaming and the other starts crying. You hear the pattern of foot steps running across the hall, and climbing the steps. Finally, the child bursts in your room. Your 'rest time' is over. It's the beginning of another long day of breaking up fights, dealing with disobedience, and cleaning up after the smaller versions of yourself. You'll try to have patience with the steady streams of "I want" and "Can I have".

Some days offer a surprise. A change in the mundane. Maybe a trip to the hospital to fix a head injury. Or maybe they'll all get sick at the exact same time, and you'll wonder if the projected vomit somehow defies the laws of physics to get into places you didn't know existed. How about chasing a naked child down the street and wondering where he stashed his clothes and how he'd gotten out of the gate?

At eleven PM, after fighting with them for two hours to stay in their beds, they finally fall asleep. You sit down for a while to enjoy the silence and catch your breath. You finally have enough time to discuss some important matters with your spouse, but both of you are too tired to talk. Finally, you head up to get ready for bed. You lean over the children to kiss them goodnight and your heart melts.

Suddenly, you forget the fights. You can't remember your frustration. Your ears are no longer ringing. Suddenly you realize how much you love them. You stop asking yourself why you ever thought having children was a good idea. The feeling alone is worth it, and you thank God for giving them to you.

Family Meetings Are Now On The Agenda
"Not another meeting!"That tends to be the reaction from many parents when they hear the M word mentioned. Parents tend to associate meetings with the workplace rather than families. Even at work, meetings tend to be tolerated rather than keenly anticipated. My research and my anecdotal evidence suggest that families that have a process to share decisions and to resolve conflict have more cooperative kids and less open sibling disputes. To be truthful, I stopped talking about family meetings in my presentations some years ago as people's eye...(related: Parenting)

Reading, Writing, Rithmetic -- And Recess!
Recess has begun disappearing in states all around the country. The reason is the increasing emphasis on "academics" and the mistaken belief that recess detracts from time that could be better spent studying. According to some estimates, 40% of schools have already eliminated recess or are considering the idea. Some cities have abolishe...(related: Parenting)

Parenting In The Kitchen ? Lessons In Cooking, Socializing, And Bonding
Kitchens are where everything happens. It's not just where meals are prepared ? it's usually the hub of the home, where family and friends get together to spend time. Cooking and eating together is about more than nutrition for the body. It's also the experience of connecting and interacting with family members, to feed relationships. Try to choose one meal that everyone comes to the table. It doesn't have to be dinner. This is a challenge as everyone has their own activities (especially as children grow), but starting early promotes the importance of family time together, and also demonstrates a healthy attitude towards food and eating.So...(related: Parenting)

Picky Eater Kid Nutritional Guidelines
Although many children are picky eaters at some stage in their lives, the experts say not to worry. Unless you are feeding him or her chips and cookies three times each day, these children will most likely meet their weekly nutritional quotas. However, if you are concerned about their developmental progress, make an appointment with their pediatrician for confirmation. In the meantime, you may want to include a multivitamin in your child's daily diet to balance his intake of nutrients.Instead of looking at what types of food your child is eating meal-by-meal or even day-by-day, round out the picture by looking at your child's diet week-by-week.Most children do not eat...(related: Parenting)

Cooking With Your Kids Helps Develop Motor Skills For Preschoolers
Did you know that cooking with your kids is a natural way for them to develop motor skills? If you've never looked at cooking that way before, think again. There's a reason why kids have a universal love for cooking - just like for stacking blocks and banging!Cooking is especially good for preschoolers and here's how:1. Two year olds are developing large muscles in their arms: They will enjoy stirring and stirring and stirring :-). My two year old is always asking to stir; and her subconscious knows why! At 2 years old, a child naturally imitates circular strokes as part of their normal physical development. So, let them stir at every opportunity. Here are some ways to encourage arm muscle development through cooking:...(related: Parenting)

Adhd: A Dialogue With A Non-believer, Part Two

Dear Sir,

It was with some interest that I read the article What You Should Know About Attention Deficit Disorder by Edward W. after having it handed to me by a member of our church. There were elements of the article that were insightful, helpful, and needed to be said in a public forum, especially the discussion of the moral and spiritual dimensions of behavior. For this part of the article I applaud Mr. W.

However, Mr. W's discussion on the physiological/biological aspects of ADD ADHD was lacking to the point of being misleading to the readers. I am sure that Mr. Welch had no intention of misleading any readers, as that would hardly reflect the "biblical guidelines with which to understand ADD" that he seeks to communicate. Life Lessons In A Glass Of Beer
It was blisteringly hot last Saturday. As I took that first sip of a cold quality beer I knew it was sure to ease my thirst. However, I never expected that in that same frosted mug were also lessons on how to be a better Dad.Often as fathers we find parental inspiration in the most unlikely of places. For me, further insight into my parenting skills came to me just last week while attending a seminar on beer & BBQ'ing. Perhaps it was the samples of fine micro-brews, or spending time in the company of other Dad's, but as our speaker discussed the secrets of brewing a premium beer, my mind began to draw comparisons to parenting.I learned that when it comes to making beer, everyone starts out with roughly the same raw ingredients?b...(related: Parenting)
